How did you end up working at Sephora?
I began in traditional marketing environments (ad agency, publishing), then dipped my toes into the retail space as a buyer, and eventually found my way to Sephora where I practice marketing in the retail space. When I first started in advertising, especially at the ad agency, I worked with a lot of retail brands and knew I’d eventually want to try working in-house for a retail company. I didn’t plan on becoming a merchandise coordinator/assistant buyer to do so, but I applied for that role out of curiosity for a brand I admired and got the gig. In that case, I gravitated more toward the company than the role itself but it worked in my favor in the end since it was a great way to gain knowledge of the inner workings of online retail.
What does a typical day in the office look like for you?
I manage how campaigns (sales, brand/product launches, holidays, etc) for all of our product categories like fragrance, makeup, skincare, etc. are displayed on our homepage across platforms. I work with the creatives to request content, provide direction, and request edits in the proofing rounds of the delivered assets. I currently work for the Canada site experience team (so just for the .ca website), however in a couple weeks I’m transitioning to help with all of North America (.ca and .com).
How has Digital Studies influenced your career path?
Digital Studies inspired me to pursue a career in digital communications. It introduced me to the many potential paths that fall within its field. It made me comfortable experimenting within the space and finding which path is right for me.
Did you have a favorite Digital Studies class when you were a student?
Journalism 445: Creative Campaign Messages really stuck out to me. I took that class over the summer as (I believe) my first marketing-focused course and it really solidified my love for that world. It ultimately led me to choose the Strategic Communications track within the Journalism school. I remember making some really fun mock campaigns for brands like Lucky Charms, Specialized bikes, and New Glarus beer, that let my creativity loose. It was also a great way to make friends with other UW marketing students since it felt kind of like summer camp (a few I’m still in touch with).
Do you have any advice for current students?
I’m a true believer in a “no straight path” approach. Try not to limit yourself to pursuing opportunities in one field. We are all multi-faceted and UW allows for your education to reflect that. Take advantage of your elective credits – you don’t know what you don’t know. Try experimenting in an area that sparks your interest, even if it seems like it’s coming out of left field. You never know where it may lead you.
What achievement are you most proud of in your professional career thus far?
I’m proud of the journey I’ve had and the experiences I’ve collected so far. More importantly, I’m proud of the “failures” that became valuable lessons and pivoted me in new directions I hadn’t considered.
